Day 2, from Sapelo Sound to Savannah. Once again very nice waves, very little wind. We spent the day motoring.
Benito and Ben kept trolling for fish, hoping for better luck. Benito put some tomatoes and onions on the grill to make some salsa. We were just turning into the markers to go from the ocean into the Savannah River when all of a sudden one of our lines went crazy. We caught a fish!!! It caught us by surprise, we didn’t expect to be successful and weren’t ready. We had to run to the forward storage compartment to get a gaff hook, then to the back of the boat to dig buckets out of the lazarette. The reel broke off the rod and Benito had to bring the fish in by hand. He managed to get it aboard and then used a cheater bar to hit it over the head so it would quit flopping around.
Fortunately Benito has a lot of experience cooking fish. He marinated it then cooked it on the grill. We ate it with tortillas and homemade salsa. What a treat!
Lesson learned:
Fish with purpose and readiness. You never know, you just might catch something.
