We finally succeeded in spending a night out on the hook (on anchor). We took the boat to a protected anchorage between Lanier Island and St Simon’s Island. It was a beautiful day, not too hot with a steady breeze. There were several pods of dolphins in the area. We would hear them chuff air through their blowhole and run to the noise just in time to see them coming out of the water high enough to take a look at our boat. One day we might even be quick enough to get a picture. Now all our pictures just showed the water after they had gone back under. The mood was frisky and playful. Much to our delight they performed several front flips. There was one pod that wanted to feed off our stern close to shore and another that preferred the deeper water off our bow. As the sun set we saw a near full moon rise. We spend some time out on the trampolines looking up at the moon and stars, although the moon was so bright it made it hard to see many constellations. We woke up the next morning on the 1st of June to water so still and quiet it was a glass reflection of the blue sky above. We decided to dinghy ashore to go out to lunch. We parked the dinghy at a dock close by and walked two miles into town to the Southern Soul Bar-B-Que restaurant. This restaurant has won many awards and was featured on “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” on the Food Network. They were very dog friendly, provided Brooke with plenty of water to help her (and us) recuperate for the walk back. Some friends of ours from the marina drove out to where we had anchored and got a picture of our boat from the side of the road.
The kids’ favorite part was the dinghy rides. They thought it was great fun to take Brooke ashore for her potty breaks. Brooke thought that was fun too!
Our new Mantus anchor worked great. No problems with slipping, it set the first time.
In the distance you can see the Sydney Lanier bridge.
Wonderful! I’m so excited for all of you!
Looks like a great place to anchor (and get some great BBQ.
What a wonderful adventure!
