While anchored in Cocoa we experienced some battery issues. For some still unknown reason our battery bank was being drained too quickly. The refrigerators were and still are pulling more amps than they should be, but we’re not sure how to fix it. Kim spent the day on the boat running the engines and charging the batteries while the kids and I were ashore. This was after getting up in the middle of the night to check the batteries. Since tending the batteries was like caring for a newborn, we decided to stay at marinas until we could have someone troubleshoot the issue. At least in a marina we can plug in all night allowing the batteries to fully charge without setting an alarm to check them every two hours. After spending the morning in Cocoa, we left in the afternoon for a short trip down to Eau Gallie. The Eau Gallie Yacht Basin is a small well protected marina near Melbourne. We knew we were in for an experience when we called ahead to make reservations and the dockmaster told us to park next to the old rundown boat and leave a check under the office door. Docking was a tight fit with shallow water, but fortunately one of the local boaters came out to catch some lines and help secure the boat. We had only been there a few minutes when another boater came to greet us and offer us the use of his truck to go to town and provision if we needed to. This marina was not fancy, but the friendliness and the homey feel to it was charming. There was a resident cat roaming the grounds, plenty of grass for the dogs, a single washer/dryer–all the basics you need for a nice place to stay for a while.
No frills…sometimes the best bet!
