Port Engine Repair

As you may know, when we had our fender bender the strap to the hot water heater broke. Well, in the process of climbing down there and we also noticed an oil leak. We called the mechanic, he put a dye in the oil, had us run the engine for several hours, then came back the next day and used a black light to find the leak. The leak? How about the LEAKS! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, it is the original engine that came with the boat. And when one gasket dry rots enough to leak it isn’t surprising that the other ones have dry rotted too. So we had the engine hauled out of the boat, taken to the mechanic’s shop and pretty much every gasket on the entire engine replaced, whether they really needed it or not. No need to pay for a second haul out, the gaskets are cheap, the labor expensive. What was interesting was how the mechanic did it. Using just 2 guys with a system of pulleys they were able to take the several hundred pound engine out of the aft engine compartment, across the boat and into a cart to wheel it to their truck.

The mechanic took the engine to the shop, replaced the gaskets, tested the pressure, did other engine things that I’m sure Kim understands way better than I do, and then brought it back to the boat and reinstalled it. While he was at it he also cleaned it and replaced the motor mounts. We should be good to go!
