Finally, we were getting to go to Cumberland Island! We left around 7:30 in the morning from Jacksonville north on the ICW. On the way we realized we needed ice, milk, bait, bread (it had all been fed to the catfish), and there is no provisioning on Cumberland Island. We passed Amelia Island and the Fernandina Harbor Marina has a long dock right on the ICW. We pulled up and for a couple of hours they let you tie up for cheap and there are stores and restaurants within walking distance. Of course while we were there we also had lunch and ice cream. Fernandina is a dog friendly cute little town right on the water, we will be coming back.
As we returned to the boat we saw clouds in the distance and rain approaching. I hopped on board, helped the dogs and kids get situated while Kim started the engines. The kids were running around closing hatches and portholes, I was emptying the ice into the cooler and saw that Kim was on the dock. I guess she had decided to undo the lines herself so she got off the boat, removed the lines from the dock, thinking she would just quickly hop back on the boat and drive away. The wind was gently blowing on our bow. But once she undid the lines, the wind shifted and a gust blew us off the dock. The boat swung out, leaving Kim stranded on the dock The storm swept in so quickly it caught us by surprise. I ran to the helm and put both engines in full reverse to back the boat close enough to the dock for Kim to make the leap. The engines were barely able to get the boat back to the dock against that gust of wind. The anemometer said the wind speed was 30 knots! In retrospect, that was a really bad decision. I can’t imagine how I would have turned the boat around and docked it again by myself in that wind and storm to pick Kim up again.
For those who ask, what do we do on the boat all day? In general when the boat is motoring on the ICW we go between 5-8 mph. This trip took about 6.5 hours underway (not counting the time spent in Fernandina). Yes, we could walk at this speed. This day the kids read books, played legos, took turns driving, and trolled for fish.
I love following your adventures! If you remember we have been planning to live full time in our RV. Well, our house has sold and as soon as we close we will begin our new adventures as well!
I have been following Gone with the Wynns blog for quite some time now. They recently transitioned from Full Time RV living to living aboard their catamaran. You might want to check out their Adventures as well.
Looking forward to your next post.
What fun that you will be living on an RV! You will have to keep us updated on your adventures.
