Moving South

At last we got the all clear from the boatyard to move the boat away from Jacksonville and take it to its new home in Daytona. We left early in the morning without a hitch and traveled down the Intracoastal Waterway. We got to see historic downtown St. Augustine from the waterfront. We arrived at lunchtime, (when the bridge closes for an hour to allow for traffic), so we dropped anchor just off the Castillo de San Marcos. The Castillo de San Marcos was built in 1695 and is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. We’ve visited there several times from land, but it is special to get to see it from the water. They did a cannon demonstration for the tourists, we were glad they weren’t firing real cannonballs at us.

Saint Augustine Waterfront

According to Wikipedia, the Bridge of Lions is a double-leaf bascule bridge that spans the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Augustine, Florida. A part of State Road A1A, it connects downtown St. Augustine to Anastasia Island. A pair of Medici lions made of marble guard the bridge, begun in 1925 and completed in 1927 across Matanzas Bay.

The trip was uneventful, we made it to the Marineland Marina just south of St. Augustine in about 8 hours.

The kids took turns driving the boat.

Marineland is a great little marina; well protected, right off the intracoastal, clean with a friendly attentive dockmaster. There is a hiking trail nearby and the marina is almost directly across from a dog friendly beach.

And that evening we were blessed with a beautiful sunset.
